Here we are adding a metal connector rod over a saddle notch to better tie the log wall together. This is only done in log walls where unusually long lengths of log need to be spliced together. We seldom use these methods since most handcrafted log walls are designed to not run past the 55 foot length. As traditional handcrafted log builders we try to stay true to the “no nail” building methods. Wood on wood expands and contracts at the same temperatures without creating the chance of condensation.
This exterior gazebo style porch is a work of art! The round log rafters and upright columns contrast nicely against the timber-frame jack rafters and header beams. Sundance Lodge’s roof system was very complex in design, requiring a lot of work for a home that flows so elegantly and appears so simple.
